FAQ's
Generally, the commercial soaps carried at most chain stores are loaded with chemical additives such as preservatives, sulfates and lather boosters that dry out your skin and can lead to rashes and other skin irritations. The commercial soap bars that line most grocery stores’ shelves are actually synthetic detergents. While that's wonderful for your dishes, it's not very good for your skin.
Soap is a combination of water (liquid), lye (sodium hydroxide) and oils. When the lye solution is mixed with oils, it causes a chemical reaction called "saponification". The result is 3 parts soap and 1 part glycerin: which is desired for it's ability to moisturize the skin. Properly made handmade soap contains NO LYE in the end product. You cannot make real soap without lye. No Lye = No Soap This is why soap must 'cure' on the drying rack for 4-6 weeks before it can be packaged up for sale. Any left over non-converted lye from the saponification process will essentially work itself out of the bar during the 4-6 week curing process.
Most likely, you will be able to use our soaps because they are incredibly mild and gentle. Most commercial soaps are detergent based, using lots of synthetic ingredients that cause skin reactions. If you have allergies to fragrances, try our Essential Oil soaps. Please take a moment and check out our site page labeled “What’s in my Soap???” to see what skin benefits your bar of soap can hold!
